In the name of training for spring trail runs…or just for the hell of it…a few pax members are heading up to Afton for some trail running on the AT.  The planned route will be a 1 way long slow run on the AT heading into the Shenandoah National Park.  The planned route is 18-20 miles, and should take around 5 hours.  Those that would like a shorter route or would like to bike on Skyline Drive should feel welcome to join us and we will come up with a game plan for alternate activities. We will meet at the…

4 Richmond regulars gathered in the breaking gloom for ….but wait, who’s that?!  Obama coming in hot makes 5!  Now it’s a party: The route du jour had us running Buttermilk to the new T. Potter bridge, figuring out how to get down to it, then continuing downstream to the pipeline trail.  Climb the ladder to the canal walk back to Brown’s Island, then North Bank back home.  Splitting the uprights on the  two GPS watches in tow put us covering 8.5 miles. Lab Rat was very excited to try out this route today, since he finally discovered where to…

Six gentlemen rose from the fartsack to 30 degree weather and attacked the day Trail Run style.  The route planned for this morning is as follows: YHC wanted to change it up a little and add a couple of miles so the planned route involved Buttermilk to the Highrise.  Instead of the normal route to Belle Isle continue on Buttermilk East to the Floodwall.  Follow the Floodwall to 14th street.  Cross the river and work your way up the Canal Walk to Browns Island to Northbank Trail back to Pump House. TYA and YHC covered the aforementioned route for a…

Four PAX emerged to open the trails for the few from RVA not at the Bear Creek. The THANG: Texas Beach, then loop around pipeline trail for about 4 miles total.  COT NMM: The PAX posted to the parking lot, each expecting to be the only runners this morning, but were rewarded with the company of three others with the same goals for the morning.  F3 delivers again. The parking lot was 100% F3 at the start of the run, and there were very few others on the trails. Cliffhanger (Rosie 2.0) is preparing for the track team in the…

Eight stellar men ignored the wind forecast to make a loop around the trails.  Besides the gusty winds, the weather was beautiful, and those brave enough to roll out of the warm fartsacks were greeted with a stunning sunrise over the river.  Besides the weather, here is what else was on tap: Route:  Cross the wind-blown Nickle Bridge to pick up the relative calm of the Buttermilk trail.  Head to Reedy Creek with an optional lariat trail thrown in.  Under the rat tunnel to Forest Hill Loop, then back thru the tunnels.  Head back to Pump House the way we…

TYA and Lab Rat have planned a little trail run/hike on the Appalachian Trail for above date, leaving town after kids get on buses.  Planned trip is to Rockfish Gap, run 19 miles south then come home.  TYA would love to have a buffer of more pax members to prevent the need of wearing earbuds the whole trip (it’s cute he thinks that will work). Anybody interested that can take a day off work is welcome to join us.  The entire leg is 19 miles, but shorter out and back legs of any distance would be available as well.  Plan…

3 men turned on the defrost this morning to make an early morning jaunt thru the James river trails system.  Weather was hovering at the freezing point and not a breath of wind for a seriously heavy frost, combining with the turning leaves and the steam coming off the river made a fairly tale setting for our run.  Here is what went down: Leave the parking lot and head down the hill.  1/3 of us run back up the hill to lock the car, then back down.  Head to Belle Isle the long way round, Return on Buttermilk.  All were…

2 guys named Paul met YHC at the trailhead this morning for a beautiful, albeit dark start to the day.  Here is what transpired: -Short Run:  No takers -Medium run:  1 loop around the main trails, starting on Northbank, downriver side of Belle, back on Buttermilk including the lariat trail for right at 7 miles. -Long run:  2 loops of above, second one in reverse.  14 miles total. NMS YHC was the third pax in the lot this morning, expecting to see more headlights any second, but they never showed.  Oh well, let’s roll….first couple of miles this morning artificial…

5 regulars and two sunday run new G’s (guys and gals) posted on a blustery Sunday morning in RVA. The Thang: Cross the nickel bridge, take the alternate path to underneath the bridge and to the access road along the river.  Follow the road to Belle isle, take two loops around Belle Isle and head back to the south side.  Follow the access road back to the VSF. Route was just shy of 7.5 miles. NMM: TSB and I showed up a few minutes early today to an empty parking lot.  Rain was tapering off, but the wind was picking…

14 pax plus an FNG (Ely) showed up for what was easily the largest trail group that YHC has been a part of.  Plan was for Lab Rat to go deep, taking the distance pax up to Forest Hill Loop, and Johnsonville taking the shallow route, with an out and back to Reedy Creek parking lot.  Individual mileages will vary wildly this morning, but YHC’s watch clicked off 7.8 miles.  Saab ran a bit extra for his preparations for Cloud Splitter 100M next weekend, and probably finished up between 11 and 12 miles.  Shorter routes should have been around the…
